Genestealer Cult Sentinel - WIP

In line with my 1000 point plan, I've started work on a Sentinel with lascannon.

Handily, I had this model already from a long defunct army I was working on several years ago. After a few days soaking in a big tub of Dettol it was ready for a new life serving the 4 armed emperor. If you haven't tried it before, Dettol is great for taking the paint off of metal and plastic, but is a bit smelly and horrible. I used to use Fairy Power Spray, which was a lot less stinky and a bit easier, but they seem to have changed the mix as it just doesn't work anymore. The Dettol takes a few days, but you can't argue with the results.

I still have a few bits of gap fill to go, so this isn't a completely finished model yet. I've basically done it mostly stock, but have added in a few "industrial style" details to match the rest of my force. Luckily, I had some spare Killa Kan bits that were quite helpful; providing the drill attachment and chains that I've hung under the cockpit. It should be fun to paint too as it's a bit different from my other Cult units and I think plenty of Hazard striping will really set it off.

While I'm on the subject, I have to say that I think Games Workshop really dropped the ball on the styling of their Cult/Guard units like the Chimera, Russ and Sentinel. I know they were going for regular forces that have turned and went with a standard paint scheme with a few Cult accents, but it doesn't mesh with anything in the force and really looks like a last minute hash - like they painted them as Cadians and then realised they needed to release them for GS Cult next week, so they botched on a few icons overnight. I'll leave the rant there, but I just wish they'd painted them to match the force as they look a little weird side by side.

Anyway, I'm also currently working on the next squad of Neophytes, A Leman Russ (scavenged from the same defunct force and in need of some real TLC), and 5 more Genestealers. I'm seriously trying to stick with the 1000 point plan!

  1. That drill is fantastic and utterly ludicrous in equal measure ;) The fact it's shorter than the las-cannon and so would struggle to reach it's intended target I just love it. Many people think it;s only Orks who have a monopoly on the ridiculous but the Imperium can be equally bonkers and daft. I'll have to see if my mate who plays Orks has one of these so I can do it too, should I ever get round to my Genestealers.

    1. I think for cult stuff, having it a bit ramshackle and just a little bit Orky is right on the money. I figure the drill was maybe added from some spare mining or other industrial equipment, or perhaps was the Sentinel's original purpose and it was then rigged for combat by adding the Lascannon. Either way it's a bit of fun that makes it stand out.

  2. I agree with Dave, the drill totally makes the model. Perfect Grimdark.

    1. Thanks. I'm looking forward to finishing the thing off and painting it as it should be cool once it's done and stand out a bit amongst the hordes of infantry. The conversion didn't take long, but sometimes a quick addition can add a nice flair to things without going overboard.

  3. Good call on the drill! I tried something similar with my own cult armoured Sentinel, but I overcame Dave's criticism by mounting it on the end of a... Deff Dread? Pneumatic arm >:)

Mines a little more mecha and a little less Sentinel, though, as I wanted it to look more mining mech:

    1. Nice work. I like how unique your one is, and taking inspiration from Final Fantasy was a cool twist!
